The Workshop PANAGIA ELEOUSA was founded in 1990, under the initiative of Mrs. Maria Tsoutsou, a mother of an intellectually disabled boy, with the help of many distinguished citizens of Messolonghi and Agrinio cities. It is a Charitable Society, a Private Law Legal Entity, a non-for-profit organisation of social and public interest and it is under the aegis and the inspection of the Ministry of Labour, Social Insurance and Social Welfare and of the Region of Western Greece. The Organization is administered by a seven-member Board of Directors and a three-member Auditing Committee.
Panagia Eleousa Workshop has a highly qualified staff team and provides training, counselling, psychological support, lifelong education and care to 160 people, with moderate and or severe intellectual disabilities, aged over fifteen years coming from the whole prefecture of Etoloakarnania, who are supported free of any charge.
The organization has two Education Centres, located in Agrinio and Messolonghi, the Nautical Sports-Environmental Centre-Campsite in Messolonghi and Residential Services in Messolonghi. Over the time its work was highly recognized by different organizations, reaching the following certifications:
- By the National Organisation for the Certification of Qualifications and Vocational Guidance (EOPPEP) as specialized Centre of vocational and social rehabilitation (for people with disabilities) and of additional support services;
- By the Ministry of Labour, as a Service Provider of 1st Grade and 2nd Grade Social Care, of non-profit nature;
- By the European Platform for Rehabilitation (EPR) in the field of social services (EQUASS Excellence).
In addition, the organisation was appointed by EPR in 2015 as “National Reference Point of EQUASS/National Representative of EQUASS” in Greece. Also in 2015 the organization was awarded by the Academy of Athens with the prize of Ekaterini P. Economou, for its great social contribution.
The mission of Panagia Eleousa workshop is stated as “To educate and care for the service users-people with intellectual and related disabilities by providing them innovative programs, to develop their full potential, to empower them in the field of social rehabilitation and also to contribute to the improvement of their quality of life.”
