The 'Congregation of Sisters Hospitallers of the Sacred Heart of Jesus', was founded in Ciempozuelos-Madrid (Spain) on 31 May 1881, by St. Benedict Menni, Priest of the Order of St. John of God, María Josefa Recio and María Angustias Giménez. They were chosen to provide a solution for the lack of healthcare for, and social exclusion of, the mentally ill of that period. Their work would combine two fundamental aspects: charity and science.
In those days, the traditional neglect of the sick and the lack of an adequate public healthcare system, was even more noticeable in the case of the mentally ill, and of children with bone malformations, scrofula, tuberculosis and other illnesses, who were marginalised and left to their fate.
Today, the Congregation is in 24 countries all over the world, in Europe, America, Asia and Africa.
Sisters Hospitallers of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Institute, is a private institution for social solidarity (IPSS). It has 12 different homes in Portugal that belong to the Portuguese Province of Sisters Hospitallers.
'Queen St. Elisabeth Home' (CSRSI) is one of the 12 centres, providing health care to people with psychiatric illnesses, people with physical and mental disabilities, people who are elderly or suffering with dementia and people with other illnesses in accordance to the founding charisma.
Fulfilling its mission, the insititute counts on the support of almost 280 co-workers and volunteers who, together with Sisters, contribute with their professional abilities and personal dedication to the sick, in order to attain the objective of offering health care of the highest quality.
Most of the clients belong to the National Healthcare System, but there is a great development on demand of other healthcare systems, such as Public Administration, Army, Police and Bank Union.
At CSRSI the mission and the founding spirit of the Congregation not only remains strong, but is also essential in order to assist in the serious problem of caring for the most marginalized
A Congregação de Irmãs Hospitaleiras do Sagrado de Jesus, foi fundada em 31 de Maio de 1881 em Ciempozuelos-Madrid (Espanha), sob o impulso de S. Bento Menni, sacerdote da Ordem Hospitaleira de S. João de Deus, Maria Josefa Recio e Maria Angustias Giménez.
A Congregação surge como resposta à situação de abandono e exclusão social das senhoras doentes mentais da época. A sua missão específica é a do serviço às pessoas portadoras de doença mental, deficientes físicos e psíquicos, preferencialmente pobres.
A Congregação actualmente está presente em vinte e quatro países de quatro continentes: Europa, América, Ásia e África.
O Instituto das Irmãs Hospitaleiras do Sagrado Coração de Jesus (IIHSCJ), uma Instituição Particular de Solidariedade Social, é responsável por dirigir os 12 estabelecimentos de saúde pertencentes à Província Portuguesa da Congregação das Irmãs Hospitaleiras do Sagrado Coração de Jesus.
A Casa de Saúde Rainha Santa Isabel (CSRSI), um dos estabelecimentos, tem por finalidade essencial o tratamento, a recuperação e a reabilitação de doentes, na área da saúde mental e psiquiatria, em clima de liberdade e de criatividade, numa visão integral da pessoa, segundo o carisma dos fundadores.
Na CSRSI contamos com o apoio de 280 colaboradores, Irmãs e voluntários, que contribuem para uma cada vez melhor oferta de serviços em que a atitude humana, a esmerada qualidade de relação e o máximo respeito pelos direitos fundamentais das doentes, são os principais objectivos.
Embora a maioria dos clientes seja proveniente do Serviço Nacional de Saúde, há um crescente número de outras entidades, ou sub-sistemas de saúde (por ex.: Administração Pública, Forças Armadas, e Policiais, Sindicato dos Bancários) que procura os serviços da CSRSI.
Na CSRSI, pretende-se que o espírito da hospitalidade, como um valor humano e como uma virtude que se vive na Igreja e no Mundo seja, de facto, a manifestação mais autêntica da caridade, essencial para elevar os mais desfavorecidos.
